In case you did not see my previous server room video here is an update to the old video: www.youtube.com In this update video you will see that we moved part of our server infrastructure around in the server room, as we are planning to move this equipment within the next 60 days to a new server room with better air conditioning and better power conditioning. This old server room is very noisy and gets very hot and does not have space to grow, The new server room alone is costing $50000 for the air conditioning and power configuration alone. Our DSL line is a 10 Mb high-speed internet connection, We have 12 servers, of which you only see 8 servers here. The other servers are in other locations due to lack of space. There are 3 Mac servers, and the other 9 are Dell brand running Windows 2003 servers. They run specialized functions such as providing DNS, DHCP, print server, file server, mail server, data-backup, data base server, Mac Services, web server, ad/domain controller & ad backup, restore images. In addition, we are installing a wireless controller and new WAP access points to cover 6 floors and gigabyte network switches, with a total cost of over $150000 so it is not cheap. While video conferencing and web conferencing are sometimes confused, the reality is that web conferencing is a completely different animal, with far more options available and a much greater range of functionality than video conferencing. Web conferencing offers not just the opportunity to chat and communicate via webcam so that you can see each person in your conferencing link, but to exchange documents, share applications, access shared desktops, use PowerPoint, whiteboards and other presentation features and even poll participants. It all started with PLATO... Web conferencing is "the total package." Interestingly, the conceptual design of web conferencing began long beforehere was a World Wide Web or Internet structure in place. In the 1960's, the University of Illinois developed a system known as PLATO for their Computer-based Education Research Laboratory (CERL). It was a small, self-contained system supporting a single classroom of terminals connected to one mainframe computer. In 1972, PLATO was moved to a new system of mainframes that eventually supported over one thousand users at a time. In 1973, Talkomatic was developed by Doug Brown. This was essentially the first "instant messaging" program ever designed, with multiple windows displaying typed notes in real time for several users simultaneously. In 1974, Kim Mast developed Personal Notes, a new feature for PLATO that enabled private mail for users. In 1975, Control Data Corporation set up its own PLATO system in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the first commercial use of multi-function conferencing system. Within ten years, PLATO was being used in over one hundred sites around the world, some with dedicated lines for full-time use. In the late 1980's, however, microcomputers were becoming more reasonably priced and the heyday of mainframe-based systems was over. Eventually the original Control Data systems were shut down because PLATO was no longer cost-effective. Control Data now has a few systems operating under the name CYBIS. PLATO's descendants In the late 1970's, Ray Ozzie and Tim Halvorsen worked at CERL. Years later they took some of the features of PLATO and greatly expanded on their capabilities when designing one of today's most powerful web conferencing tools -- Lotus Notes, released in 1989. Lotus Notes was the first commercially released product that really took off to offer user-created data-bases, document sharing, and remote location communication under one umbrella. It created a "relationship based" environment that took the corporation world by storm. Other descendants of PLATO included DEC Notes, originally known as VAX, written by Len Kawell. It is still used today on DEC's EASYnet and on Starlink, a universal web conferencing community. NetNotes is a client-server system designed to improve on the original DEC Notes, with WebNotes as an add-on for World Wide Web access. True WEB conferencing The distinction between true web conferencing and systems conferencing is difficult, however, to define. When the Web first became a contender as a valid means of collaborative conferencing with document sharing, etc, many companies took conferencing packages originally designed for intranet systems and redesigned them. The results weren't always seamless. It wasn't until the mid-1990's that true Web Conferencing software that was reliable was available.PLATO and other main-frame based conferencing systems were based on a centralized structure, with all elements feeding into a central computer. This structure saw the development of several types of conferencing software that included Backtalk, Caucus, COW, Motet, Web Crossing, Podium, TALKaway and YAPP.PlaceWare, arguably one of the most influential Web conferencing systems developed, had interesting origins in the 1990's at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, where it began as a multi-user game called LambdaMOO. PlaceWare was one of the first companies to provide complete Web conferencing after the initial release of PlaceWare Auditorium in 1997. In April of 2003, Microsoft purchased PlaceWare, adding it to its newly formed Real-Time Collaborative Business Unit.P2P shifts the focus of web conferencing Another popular form of software was Groupware, essentially defined by Lotus Notes. The difference between the centralized structure of PLATO-based systems and Lotus is in the additional functions -- Lotus provided a host of other options like scheduling and document sharing. Groupware software is more complex than Centralized software and focus on work flow; that is, making sure documents, graphics and templates are where they need to be. Popular Groupware products developed in the 1990's included InTandem, Livelink, Lotus Domino, Oracle InterOffice, TEAMate and WebShare. As the price of home computers dropped, peer to peer (P2P) file sharing became more and more commonplace over the World Wide Web, although primarily on a user to user basis. That changed when members of Napster, then an illegal, informally organized group of college youth and other music-lovers, began sharing millions of music files among themselves. It began a revolution in the use of the Internet that changes the way Web conferencing was eventually perceived. P2P began to be seen as the way to host Web conferencing, rather than through a single server. . Groove took this peer to peer concept and applied it to Web conferencing. The Groove technology, originally released in 2000, was upgraded to real performance power with Groove 2.1 in 2002 and was impressive. The advantages of peer to peer were immediately obvious -- once you loaded the software and were set up, you never had to pay a subscription or user fee for an offsite server to store any files, you will never lose all files in one central location, and you are set up and good to go for life (or until the next upgrade, at least). Another company that recognized the need for quality Web conferencing software during these years was WiredRed Software, founded in 1998. In 2003, they released e/pop, a real-time Web Conferencing suite with comprehensive features for all aspects of industry -- it was the first installable web conferencing software with no significant install time. NextPage also offers P2P web conferencing and document sharing capabilities developed out of the Napster movement. In fact, they use the example of Napster file sharing and downloads to illustrate to companies the advantages of using a peer to peer network over a centralized server. What about UseNet? In the 1980's, Usenet software was developed with specific protocols to format and transmit messages. It also allowed messages to be passed from one news server to another, replicating around the world rather than being stored in any one location. It has become the standard for news readers on the Internet, with Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer both having built-in news readers for UseNet. . For some, web conferencing can be achieved simply by taking advantage of UseNet. Download free software to set up a news server, create a few local newsgroups on it, and have your users access your server with their Web browsers to create your conferencing site. Most companies, of course, prefer to have a more professional package than that, and ease of use and security are concerns that are addressed better by companies who have specifically developed company or enterprise Web Conferencing solutions. A good web conferencing package today contains voice over IP (VoIP), co-browsing and application sharing at the minimum, with add-ons and other features if needed, including polling, event management, PowerPoint presentation, playback, recording and live annotation and markup. Easynet, founded in 1994, is a broadband networking company based in Europe providing primarily European businesses with Web conferencing capabilities. This infrastructure based provider provides unbundled loop access to companies in some countries as a part of a "leased line" program for conferencing. VoIP is making noise The latest frontier in Web conferencing is the practicality of using IP based voice communications on a regular basis with Web conferencing. While Web conferencing is considered desirable for document exchange, text messaging and whiteboards and many other functions, many people still think VoIP technology has poor quality overall, especially with so many people still using dial-up connections. . Actually, there are several contenders in the marketplace who have produced excellent quality VoIP offerings in their Web conferencing packages, including Voxwire, Orbitalk, RoomTalk, and VoiceCafe. The future of web conferencing One of the last stumbling blocks for web conferencing has been the incompatibility between Macs and PC's. With the heavy preference for Macs by those in graphics heavy industries such as architecture, advertising and publishing, it has always been difficult to share documents and set up effective Web conferencing if the clients are PC-based. . Session from WaveThree was released in 2003 to address this problem and seems to have actually overcome this seemingly insurmountable problem -- one of the first really effective systems for Mac/PC collaboration over the Internet. Using a bandwidth of 128 KBPS or above, Session provides videoconferencing, desktop sharing, document sharing, whiteboards and live annotations on photos and/or documents. More Web conferencing platforms of this type will no doubt be on the horizon. As Web conferencing becomes more and more common, new developments will inevitably arise, including, perhaps, dedicated lines that are constantly open, improved, secure peer-to-peer access and more Mac/PC web conferencing options. With so many players on the field, it is likely that there will be a variety of divergent developments over the next few years. You may think you understand video conferencing pretty well until someone who isn't at all familiar with it approaches you for a simple definition. When they ask, "What exactly is video conferencing?" you could suddenly realize you're at a loss for words. The simplest definition of how video conferencing works is simply by the integration of video, audio and peripherals to enable two or more people to communicate simultaneously over some type of telecommunications lines. In other words, you are transmitting synchronized images and verbal communications between two or more locations in lieu of them being in the same room. How video conferencing works is a little bit harder to explain thananswering the question, "What is video conferencing?" Millions of people use video conferencing every day around the globe, but very few people know just how the technical aspects of the process work. The main ingredients of successful video conferencing are video cameras, microphones, appropriate computer software and computer equipment and peripherals that will integrate with the transmission lines to relay the information. The analog information recorded by the microphones and cameras is broken down into discreet units, translating it to ones and zeros. A Codec encodes the information to a digital signal that can then be transmitted to a codec at the other end, which will retranslate these digital signals back into analog video images and audio sounds. The theory's the same, the transmission has changed In the earlier days of video conferencing, T1, ATM and ISDN lines were used almost exclusively but were really only practical for room-based video conferencing systems. These dedicated lines were expensive and only large corporations tended to have the facilities and money to invest in this type of set-up. As the Internet became more a part of the everyday lives of all businesses, however, it changed how video conferencing was conducted. The TCP/IP connections of the Internet are much less expensive and can carry large quantities of information, including video packets for conferencing, relatively easily. Because of this, video conferencing has become much more prevalent in small businesses and in desktop packages that can be set up with software for computer-to-computer networking. Compression makes video transmission practical The problem that arises when you convert analog to digital for transmission is the loss of clarity in an image. Analog signals are a continuous wave of amplitudes and frequencies showing shades and ranges of color as well as depth and brightness. When you convert to digital, which is strictly 0's and 1's, you then need to develop a grid to represent values, intensities and saturations of different color values so that the image can be interpreted and reformed at the receiving end. This vast amount of digital information requires huge bandwidth and means that the time it would take to transmit video images would be impractical for most applications. That's where compression is crucial. When determining how video conferencing works, one of the most important elements is the compression ratio. The higher the compression ratio, the more quickly the information is capable of being transmitted. In many cases, however, this also means some loss in clarity or audio/video quality. For instance, a compression ratio of 4:1 would be terribly slow but have a fantastic picture quality. But by the time it was transmitted, everyone at the other end would probably have left the room for a cup of coffee. Lossy compression discards unneeded or irrelevant sections of a signal in order to transmit only the essentials, speeding up the transmission time significantly but sometimes resulting in loss of quality. Compression can either be intra-frame or inter-frame for material that is repetitive or redundant, such as that wall behind the conference participant. Since the wall remains static and never changes, this image is redundant and can be eliminated from transmissions to an extent with proper compression. Intra-frame compression assumes the redundancy will be present in parts of a frame that are close to each other. Inter-frame compression assumes that there is redundancy over time (i.e., like that wall). Either of these can achieve a fairly high degree of accuracy and reduce the bandwidth needed for transmittal of signals. A newer version of compression/decompression is SightSpeed technology, developed by Cornell University. SightSpeed compresses only images considered essential and eliminating what is considered 'filler,' relying on the brain to fill in the decompression at the other end. Based on an artificial intelligence model, SightSpeed achieves compression of about 90:1, compared to the typical 15:1 for video conferencing. Any video conferencing session you use will provide compression of the transmission signal. The key is determining the balance between speed and video picture quality that is right for your needs. Point to point video conferencing Point to point video conferencing is just what it sounds like - a link between two different points on the planet, or two different video conferencing terminals. It could be between an office in New York City and a conference room in Munich. Point to point video conferencing can easily be initiated by someone on one end contacting the other end as though making a standard telephone call. There are no special arrangements to be made other than knowing that the participants will be there. Multipoint conferencing is more complex Multipoint conferencing is more complicated because it has to coordinate several different locations simultaneously. Since you can't be in direct contact with several places at once while they are all in contact with others, you need one source that will tie them all together. In video conferencing, this is called a multipoint bridge or multipoint conferencing unit (MCU). An MCU enables multi-location video conferencing by providing a sort of "central processing center" for all of the locations through which all the information flows. The MCU receives all information from the various locations and then sends it out to each location. In some cases the MCU is located on a particular PC, and in other cases it is located on a remote server (the most common structure, particularly for more powerful MCU networks). Audio is usually sent and received simultaneously in all locations with an MCU with no problem because of the relatively small bandwidth needed for transmittal. It is broadcast in what is called "full duplex" mode, meaning everyone can talk and hear at the same time with no cutting off when one person or another speaks. Video transmission, however, can be broadcast in a number of ways with an MCU depending upon the quality of the software and the complexity of the system. Some common types of video transmission for video conferencing include: Continuous Presence video conferencing, which allows up to four conference sites to be seen simultaneously on split screens. This is usually used if you have a small group or individuals in separate locations and will primarily be seeing close-up shots. Universal Control video conferencing is controlled by the initiating conference site. The primary site determines who sees what at all other sites. Voice Activated video conferencing is by far the most common type used today. The image with these systems shifts to the site that is currently activating the microphone so that you can always see whoever is speaking. However, if there is a good deal of background noise participants should mute their microphones when they aren't talking in order to avoid the image jumping about needlessly. Overcoming the language barrier Obviously, communicating through video conferencing can't be achieved unless both ends of the conference are "speaking the same language." That is, whatever is being transmitted electronically will need to be reassembled properly and heard and seen clearly at the other end. The Codec system (Coder-Decoder) is useless if both ends aren't using the same virtual language to interpret the signals. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) developed a set of standards in 1996 dubbed H.323 to outline specific guidelines for Video Conferencing standards and protocols so that compliance and support across networks would be easier to achieve and maintain. Since then, many manufacturers and developers of video conferencing tools have adopted the H.323 guidelines as their own. Web conferencing solutions such as Click to Meet, Lotus's SameTime, and WebEx also offer corporate solutions that are based on Internet video conferencing. These systems have shared protocols that can be downloaded and used anywhere at any location for subscribers through the Internet. These are becoming more popular with companies who like the convenience and user-friendliness. They will no doubt become more and more refined over time, vying with and perhaps surpassing the H.323 standards. Overcoming firewall issues There are, of course, obstacles to overcome when you take a look at how video conferencing works. After all, you're sending vast amounts of translated data either directly or through a gatekeeper system (the MCU) that is switching and transferring information between a variety of computers. Just about any business these days has a firewall system to provide security and protect the system from potential viruses. Trouble is, many firewalls also block the transmission of data for video conferencing. Recent innovations have largely circumvented these problems by designing firewall solutions that recognize video conferencing signaling requests and allow the information packets to bypass the firewall or router without disabling the firewall protection for other traffic. Even with this, however, there may be occasions when packets are dropped because of heavy traffic on the system, so investing in a firewall system that can handle substantial traffic is essential to quality video conferencing performance. How video conferencing works will certainly evolve over time and improve in the coming years, but a basic understanding of what it is and how it works now will help you make the best choice for you when you're ready to begin using video conferencing yourself. The good news emerging from this bleak history is that a populist revolution has begun.

Just enough engineering was done to offer some basic services, but everything else was done manually and users paid a premium. As a result, medium and small businesses rarely used it. The good news emerging from this bleak history is that a populist revolution has begun.
As the decades rolled, Ma Bell's austere audio conferencing services conditioned users to have low expectations. When AT&T was divested in the mid-1980's the Baby Bells repeated the practices with very few changes other than reservation-less conferencing which issued a permanent call in PIN and 800 number. The current fare of services has not progressed from here.
The crazy thing about this circumstance is that us generally demanding consumers stopped asking long ago if audio conferencing could do better. We had been so beaten down by Ma Bell's drill sergeants that we simply got in line, cup in hand.
